Paper: Women join gas drilling boom, too

WASHINGTON (AP) — There are plenty of burly guys working in Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry, but women are finding jobs, too.

The Observer-Reporter of Washington reports Monday that two young women are making careers in the industry.

Chemical engineer Shana Sckena and biologist Shannon Miles tell the paper they enjoy the work. Sckena says that she’s happy to have gotten a job close to home, and Miles oversees a staff of 24. Both women grew up in the area, which is about 30 miles southwest of Pittsburgh.

They work for a subsidiary of MarkWest Energy Partners, L.P., a natural gas processing company.
