Holden facing tough primary challenge

ALLENTOWN (AP) — Ten years ago, Democratic Rep. Tim Holden beat the odds and defeated a heavily favored Republican opponent.

He’s hoping for another down-to-the-wire victory in next week’s primary election against a well-funded opponent.

Standing in the way is challenger Matt Cartwright, a prominent attorney who says Holden’s views no longer represent the 17th Congressional District now that it has tens of thousands more Democrats.

The district in northeastern Pennsylvania had skewed Republican until the GOP redrew the political map, putting the conservative Democrat’s career in jeopardy.

Holden predicts voters will recognize his “commitment to working people.”
